VIDEO: My price comparison on the nostalgic marshmallow eggs

The price differences were surprising, but one thing remained the same - I still walked out with a box of marshmallow eggs. Because, at the end of the day, tradition wins.

HAVE you noticed the rising cost of Easter treats but you still buy them anyway?

Well, that’s me in a nutshell every Easter holiday, which I’m afraid is the sweet cost of tradition which I have to pay.
Years ago, that box held 48 marshmallow eggs. Today? 36 eggs for nearly double the price all thanks to inflation.

But for many of us, the tradition is worth it, even if we grumble about the escalating cost every year.

When I had children of my own, I naturally passed this tradition down. Despite rolling my eyes at the price hikes, I still found myself reaching for the same blue and yellow box, year after year. But this year, I decided to do something different.

Instead of blindly grabbing the first pack I saw, I turned my Easter shopping into a mini-investigation — how much do different stores charge for the exact same thing?

Armed with patience and determination, I investigated five stores: Checkers, SPAR, Pick n Pay, Game and Dischem.

@caxtonlocalmedia Northglen News journalist, Candyce Pillay, took to the shops to conduct her very own price comparison on her favourite chocolate marshmallow egg ahead of Easter. She said: “This specific brand of easter egg is ingrained in me. I don’t see that changing no matter what the price is but, I will shop around to see where I can find it cheaper!” Do you think Easter eggs are too expensive? Do you stick to a specific brand or do you like to test the waters with other brands? Or have you ditched the marshmallow egg completely? The prices differ — some drastically, some only by a few rands. I guess you also have to take into consideration your proximity to the stores. I mean, you’re not going to spend R20 worth of petrol to save R5 on a box of eggs.
