Community support makes a difference

The Kloof and Highway SPCA is grateful to the community's support that helped them through the financial year of 2024.

AS the financial year ends, the Kloof and Highway SPCA has acknowledged the community’s role in supporting its fundraising initiatives and making donations that ensure that it can continue with its animal welfare services.

SPCA Manager Barbra Patrick said the past year had its challenges, but the organisation, which relies entirely on donations and fundraising, remained committed to its work. “Without the generous support of our community, we would not have been able to keep our doors open,” she said.

The SPCA’s inspectorate team, which responds to animal cruelty cases 24/7, has been able to operate thanks to ongoing financial support. Reports from the public have played a major role in identifying and addressing cases of neglect and abuse. Fundraising efforts such as thrift store sales and sterilisation clinics have also helped sustain operations.

“The sale of donated goods in our Charity and Thrift Shops has raised much-needed funds, and our sterilisation clinics have helped prevent unwanted litters, reducing the risk of neglect and cruelty,” Patrick said.

Volunteers have also been instrumental in supporting the SPCA, with people offering their time to walk dogs, socialise with cats, and assist with daily operations.
Despite efforts to rehome animals and prevent cruelty, Patrick acknowledged that not every case has a happy ending. “We don’t get everything right, and some days are incredibly difficult for our team. But we will always be here for all animals, ensuring that no animal in need is turned away,” she said.

Looking ahead, the SPCA said it will continue investigating animal cruelty cases, conducting inspections, and educating the public on responsible pet ownership. With another financial year beginning, the organisation remains reliant on donations and community support to continue its work.
