Enjoy footy at Escombe

Escombe Football Club has teams from U6 to Over-45, and is welcoming new players to register for the season ahead.

COMING off the back of a successful George Beecroft Tournament hosted over four weeks, Escombe Football Club’s soccer season is well and truly underway.

Teams from around eThekwini competed in the senior tournament that saw three teams from the club compete, with an U19 team winning the reserves’ section.

Chairman of the club, Tyrone Chamier, who has been involved with the club for three decades, said it is all about growing the love for the game.

“The club has great history, I played here as a junior, I’ve coached here and I’m still involved in club football 32 years later. I think a key part of the club ethos is growing the love for the game but also promoting football at a junior level. We have teams from U6 up to U17 and then an U19 team and another successful team, our over 45 team. For the youth, I think soccer offers them a chance to stay active, work as a team and to say off the streets.

“We have children from all over the Queensburgh area that participate. If any youngster would like to register, our team is at the clubhouse from Tuesday to Friday from 19:00. With our over-45 team, we play every Friday at 19:00 and the vibe is very much a social one, however, so many of the gents still have that competitive spirit which is great to see. We would love to see the club base grow more so we encourage the community to come out and support us,” he said.

Reflecting on the recent George Beecroft Tournament, Chamier said it was a successful tournament despite the heavy rains.

“We did have to move the fixtures around a little but for the most part it went off without a hitch. Our teams played some competitive soccer and it was a great way to also test our mettle against some of the other competitive teams around Durban,” he said.
