Weather alert: Level 4 weather warning issued for KZN

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution as widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours.

THE City has advised residents to exercise caution, stay indoors if possible, and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.

This follows a weather warning issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS) for today, Wednesday, September 24.

The forecast model indicates level 4 disruptive rainfall with widespread showers and rainstorms across KwaZulu-Natal from today into Thursday, September 25, until around midday.

The City said the widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours.

“The persistent rainfall may result in the flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements, poor driving conditions, damage to infrastructure in some areas, and the destruction of mud-based houses,” read the eThekwini Municipality statement.

The City urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads.

“The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services remain on standby.

“This alert remains subject to change. SAWS will update the warning accordingly.”

The City advised residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, to take the necessary safety precautions.

The public is reminded to not cross swollen rivers and streams, especially where water is above ankle level.

In case of an emergency, the public can contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
