Ratepayers and taxi association hold productive meeting

Julie Cox of the ratepayers' association in the Upper Highway area says a rehabilitation project for Inanda Road is yet to get underway.

A MEETING held between the ratepayers’ association of the Upper Highway area and the Molweni-Wyebank Taxi Association on Tuesday, January 27, to discuss driving concerns on poorly serviced Inanda Road has been described as being productive.

Julie Cox of the ratepayers’ association said the general bad driving habits of all road users, not just taxi drivers, was discussed at the meeting.

“It is not just the taxis that do things wrong,” said Cox.

She said numerous complaints have been received by the ratepayers’ association of bad driving on the road.

Cox said representatives from the taxi association expressed a need for more stopping areas, or drop off points, along the road.

Representatives from the taxi association, according to Cox, also indicated that an internal disciplinary panel is in place which issues fines to taxi drivers who are found to have committed some or other traffic offence.

“They are very organised, they can even suspend drivers as punishment if warranted,” said Cox.

Additionally, Cox said the rehabilitation project for the road, which was announced by the  KZN Department of Transport late last year, has not commenced despite this being scheduled for January this year.

“We have contacted the department directly but we have had no replies. We did get a response to our complaints regarding the potholes and the ones that were opening up have once again been  temporarily filled with cold tar and a very bad patch of road surface was temporarily replaced,” said Cox.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the spokesperson of the department’s MEC, Siboniso Duma, had not responded to a text enquiry by the time of publishing.
