Hammarsdale statutory rape case postponed

GBVF activists have undertaken to continuously support the victim, who has fallen pregnant, and her family during this time.

THE 30-year-old man accused of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl is due back at the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on June 23.

This after the accused, who is reportedly the victim’s neighbour at Hammarsdale, appeared in court on Thursday (June 4).

Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) activist Mthokozisi Msomi, who is part of the cohort appointed by KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli in recent years to work as liaisons between communities and law enforcement in the province, said the child’s family report that she has been traumatised by the incident which allegedly has resulted in her pregnancy.

“The family has become increasingly dependent on the KwaZulu-Natal government, led by the Honourable Thami Ntuli, who has deployed GBV activists, who have consistently supported this family,” said Msomi.

He added that the activists will continue to show their support to the victim and her family by attending the suspect’s next court appearance, as they did on Thursday and during previous ones.

The police have confirmed that the suspect was arrested by detectives from the Pinetown Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

After his arrest, the suspect appeared at the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court on March 19. The matter has since been transferred to the court in Camperdown.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Reports indicate that between October 2025 and November 2025, she was in a relationship with the suspect, who was older than her. When her mother discovered that she was pregnant, she reported the matter to the police. The suspect was then arrested and charged by the police.”
