30-year-old man in court for statutory rape, victim pregnant

Police say the victim's mother reported the matter after she discovered that her 15-year-old daughter had fallen pregnant.

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl from Hammarsdale who allegedly was a victim of statutory rape by a 30-year-old man, who is her neighbour, is due to give birth soon. The suspect appeared in court on Thursday (May 14).

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed that detectives from the Pinetown Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) arrested the 30-year-old man “for a case of rape following an incident in which a 15-year-old victim was allegedly raped by a suspect known to her”.

“He appeared in the  Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court on March 19 and the case was remanded to May 14.

“Reports indicate that between October 2025 and November 2025, she was in a relationship with the suspect, who was older than her. When her mother discovered that she was pregnant, she reported the matter to the police. The suspect was then arrested and charged by the police,” said Netshiunda.

It was reported that the matter has since been moved to the court in Camperdown, where the case was remanded to June 4.

According to a source close to the victim’s family, it is alleged that the suspect had urged the child to remain mum about the rape, and allegedly made a promise to her of paying customary damages.

The source said the child’s pregnancy surfaced when she had to be rushed to a local clinic for a separate emergency, where it emerged that she is pregnant.

It is reported that the child has been severely traumatised, which has affected her schooling.

Meanwhile, GBV activist Mthokozisi Msomi said members of the structure he is in, which is under Community Safety and works closely with police stations in the Durban West District, attended court on Thursday to show support to the victim and her family.

“We will be working closely with the child’s mother. The child is currently receiving counseling, and for now, she will not be attending court until she is called to give her testimony,” said Msomi.
