Learners head off to Germany for Summer Camp Programme

The trip will give the learners the opportunity to explore parts of Germany and visit various cultural, commercial, and academic landmarks.

THREE Hillcrest High School (HHS) learners were selected, based on their PASCH 2026 competition entries, to attend a three-week summer camp in Frankfurt, Germany this month.

Anro Adendorff, Lesedi Ramakatse, and Ahreya Singh, who study German at HHS, flew via Dubai to Germany on July 4.

The trip, awarded by the Goethe Institute of South Africa, will give the three HHS Grade 11 learners the opportunity to explore parts of Germany and visit various cultural, commercial, and academic landmarks, including a visit to Heidelberg University.

HHS has achieved Pasch Schule status for the last six years and is the only public school in KwaZulu-Natal to offer German as a class subject.

German educator at HHS, Ilse Bothma said: “It was exciting to see this group of learners head off to learn more about Germany and gain a better understanding of the country, the culture and the people. In Dubai they met up with other German learners from schools in Gauteng and Western Cape before embarking on the final leg of their journey to Germany. Once there they will meet other German language learners for across the globe.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the Goethe Institute for their support which has also opened the door to many national as well as international opportunities such as this fully funded summer camp in Germany,” said Bothma.

“Through these connections, including with the German government and other institutions such as the Furtwangen University group, we currently have three HHS past pupils studying at universities in Germany.”
