Specialist paediatrician Dr Ashmika Gokhul is passionate about helping children thrive while balancing the demands of running a successful private practice. She shares what inspires her career and the lessons she’s learnt along the way.
One of the greatest rewards for Dr Gokhul is seeing a sick child recover and grow into a healthy, thriving young person. As a specialist paediatrician serving the Durban and Highway communities, she provides comprehensive outpatient, inpatient and emergency care for infants and children, while also managing the day-to-day demands of running a modern medical practice.
Alongside her clinical work, Gokhul collaborates on international clinical research studies, combining patient care with a passion for advancing paediatric medicine. She believes resilience, discipline and empathy are essential qualities for anyone considering a career in healthcare.
“Medicine, particularly paediatrics, demands long hours and lifelong learning, but the greatest reward comes from building relationships with families and advocating for young patients,” she says. “Never lose your curiosity or your passion for making a difference.”
Gokhul is equally passionate about recognising the people who make her work possible.

Looking ahead, she plans to continue expanding paediatric healthcare services across the Highway area, increase her involvement in genetic research publications and mentor young women pursuing careers in healthcare and medical entrepreneurship.
