Decade of dog walking has tails wagging
The Kloof and Highway SPCA is grateful for the support of their dog walkers.
THE Kloof and Highway SPCA extends their gratitude to their partners, the Dog Walkers. This group consists of community members who have dedicated their time to walking the dogs who are residents of the SPCA. Recently, the group celebrated 10 years of their existence and the love they share with the residents.
Speaking to the Highway Mail on the day of the celebration, Sarah van Heerden said the group started in 2013 and was open to everyone who is active and has a heart for dogs.
“We spread the word through the Highway Mail to ask people to join the community, and 10 years later, we are still going strong and love what we do,” she said.

The walks take place in the morning during certain days of the week, at the SPCA premises.
The group said that to them it is more than just walking the dogs or a duty but a beautiful way to bond with the residents of the organisation. “It is always beautiful to see some of the dogs find their forever homes after years of being in the SPCA. Yes, we miss them, but knowing they are now at a place where they belong always warms our hearts,” they said.
Barbara Patrick of the Kloof and Highway SPCA said the group is very important to them. “For 10 years, our animals have been fortunate enough to have dog walkers in their lives. These dog walkers have dedicated their time and hard work to our SPCA and need an enormous thank you. They are so much more than dog walkers. They are the animals’ friends and confidants; they are the eyes and ears for our staff, providing regular feedback on behaviour and demeanour,” she said.

Furthermore, the SPCA said the group does more than just walking the dogs but are hands-on with other things, as well.
“When we need help with fundraisers, the dog walkers get involved. When we have an Outreach Clinic, the dog walkers assist. When we require something important for The Kloof and Highway SPCA, they will rally the troops. This valuable group of people goes above and beyond to help and support.
“Thank you to Sharon Petzer and her group of volunteers who have made and continue to make an enormous difference in so many animals’ lives. We salute you all, and here’s to the next 10 years of laughing together, crying together and celebrating together. You are all that makes The Kloof and Highway SPCA so special,” she said.
