Bellair SAPS arrest man (37) for murder

The man will remain in custody until the next court hearing.

BELLAIR SAPS have arrested a 37-year-old man for the murder of a Hillary resident.

Warrant Officer Pam Pillay, Bellair SAPS communications officer, said on Sunday, May 14 that police were alerted to the discovery of the deceased (36) in his shack at the Hillary informal settlement.

“It is alleged that he, together with a group of people, were drinking alcohol inside the shack when the suspect shot the victim three times and fled. Swift reaction by the Bellair Sector Team after the information was received, enabled them to trace the suspect and apprehend him,” said Pillay.

Further investigations led to the place where the firearm was hidden. The gun was recovered with its serial number filed off, and live ammunition was also found.

“It is alleged that a few days prior to the incident, the suspect was robbed of a cellphone by the deceased, and this was an act of revenge by the suspect when the cellphone could not be retrieved,” said Pillay.

The suspect appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s court and will remain in custody until the next court hearing.

Station Commander of SAPS Bellair, Lieutenant Colonel Braveman Dladla, said he strongly condemns the community or victims for taking the law into their own hands.

“Illegal firearms are a concern and must be taken off our streets. I commend police officers for their quick response to crime of this nature, and their efforts are appreciated,” he said.
