Pinetown Boys’ trio help fellow learners boost academic results

Grade 11 learners, Minenhle Zakwe, Samkelo Lembede and Luthando Mzila, have taken a responsibility of tutoring their peers.

THREE learners at Pinetown Boys’ High School are making a difference by dedicating their time and knowledge to help fellow learners overcome academic challenges.

With many learners struggling to keep up, especially in subjects such as mathematics and English, Grade 11 learners, Minenhle Zakwe, Samkelo Lembede and Luthando Mzila, have taken responsibility for tutoring their peers, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The top achievers came up with a plan to help their schoolmates through a peer-tutoring initiative after seeing a drop in the first term. The school said the tutoring sessions began at the start of Term 2, held daily during one of the school’s two breaks.

“We created a structured programme, collaborating with teachers to monitor the progress of learners who voluntarily participated in the sessions.

“Our focus is on strengthening the foundational skills needed for success,” said one of the tutors.

For mathematics, the trio emphasise breaking down complex problems, recognising patterns and applying formulas or strategies.

“The goal is to help students develop strong reasoning skills to connect concepts and solve problems more efficiently.”

For English, the tutoring sessions go back to the basics, ensuring students who may be struggling with current lessons can grasp the fundamentals. The tutors help them improve their ability to understand, analyse and interpret English content, which is critical for academic success,” they said.

Simphiwe Memela, a departmental head at Pinetown Boys’, commended the boys for their leadership and said he hopes the programme continues to grow, both in numbers and in the quality of knowledge imparted.

Principal Sunil Sing said the school and the School Governing Body is fully supporting this initiative.

Sing promised that the school would provide any resources and support within its means to ensure the success of these tutoring sessions and to maximise the academic potential of all learners.
