Malvern scouts give back
The 1st Malvern Scout Group repaired and rehabilitated an obstacle course space at the Fairfell Guide Hall.

AN obstacle course at the Fairfell Guide Hall in Northdene has been brought to life thanks to the 1st Malvern Scout Group.
As part of his community service, Luke de Beer, who is aiming for his Springbok Scout Award, together with other members from the scout group as well a member from the Shallcross scouts group, have transformed the space described as ‘derelict’.
The 17-year-old explained that the project involved putting up a new tyre wall, a new cargo net and repairing a crawl space with new wood to help transform the area.

Luke also painted, filled in and printed new lettering for the Fairfell sign post marking the entrance to the property.
“Seeing this space from what it was to where it is now has been so pleasing. It has totally been transformed. The most rewarding thing is seeing how the Cubs gravitate towards the spot the minute they see it. There wasn’t much here before but we feel with this project there’s more substance for a space we all share and can use. Because I’m aiming for my Springbok Scout Award I spent 10 hours of community service on the Fairfell sign post.
“The project to rehabilitate and repair the obstacle course was a part of 40 hours of service. I actually finished it on New Year’s Eve but it required a bit of everything, painting, sanding, plastering and eventually spray-painting the lettering,” he said.
The project has also been welcomed by Scout Group Leader Guy Caws who has been a leader at Malvern since 1974.
“While the property is owned by the Girl Guides, we also use it as well. The scout troop from Northdene and Shallcross also meet here on a Friday. The space before we started this project was derelict.
“It used to be an obstacle course used for physical training but it wasn’t as well rounded. We elected to do this upliftment as one of our projects focused on reconstructing the obstacle course for everyone using this facility. We’ve rehabilitated the area and it looks fantastic now,” Caws said.
