Further wet weather raises fear of extensive damage

EThekwini Municipality said their disaster management team is on high alert as the rain is expected to intensify.

WITH the rain pouring non-stop, and the South African Weather Services issuing a Level 5 weather warning, long-standing Westville resident, Jean Senogles, is concerned that the rain could cause further damage to the Palmiet Hall which is on the verge of collapsing.

Senogles said they have been pleading for the hall to be protected for nearly 30 years.

“We used to have literacy lessons for domestic staff and lectures every month on conservation themes.

“There was also a church service every Sunday. The neglect of this hall is so disappointing,” said Senogles.

eThekwini Municipality said Disaster Management and Emergency Services teams remain on high alert since this morning’s heavy rains started.

The City said the downpour is expected to intensify later today, March 2.

“The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 5 weather warning across KwaZulu-Natal with heavy downpours leading to flooding, excessive lightning, hail and damaging winds which are expected over the western and southern parts of the province. Motorists are urged to be on high alert as some roads in various parts of the City have been flooded,” advised the City.

The City calls on motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The Municipality urges the public to continue to report emergencies on 031 361 0000.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
