Speaking to the Highway Mail, club chairman Andrew Mackinnon shared his excitement about the club’s return following a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are thrilled to be back with around 100 members, most of whom are children,” he said.

The Shongweni Summer Series takes place annually at the Shongweni Polo Club and features a six-event bicycle lap racing series. Races are held every Wednesday afternoon, with the 2025 series having kicked off in February. The format challenges riders to complete as many laps as possible within an allocated time – children under 12 race for 30 minutes and adults (12 and older) race for 45 minutes.

Each rider’s laps and times are recorded, and results from five out of six events contribute to overall rankings.
Beyond competition, Mackinnon emphasised the event’s focus on encouraging young riders. “One of our main goals is to get more children on bicycles. The ethos isn’t about winning but about participation. Thanks to Cycle Lab, every child who rides receives a medal, and the pride on their faces is truly rewarding,” he shared.

To keep the series accessible and sustainable, the club has partnered with local businesses for sponsorship. Mackinnon also extended an invitation to cycling enthusiasts. “Our club is open to all ages, and we look forward to welcoming new members into our cycling family,” he said.
