Music lovers! The next few days are mainly for you as Durban brings you a tribute to a legendary artist, and live orchestral music.

For theatre lovers, don’t miss The Abba Show at the new Durban North theatre. For a bit of humour, Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert will leave you in stitches while raising funds for a good cause. Also, don’t miss the melodious voices of a girls’ choir as they raise funds for a local church.
Comedy with a heart
Comedy icons Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert are bringing their award-winning show Mr & Mrs Normal to the St Agnes Auditorium on Friday, May 23, in a night of laughter, heart, and giving back.
The event is a fundraiser in support of the Youth Education & Support (YES) Trust, a registered NPO that provides vital funding and mentorship to deserving young South Africans pursuing tertiary education. By attending, you’ll be directly contributing to the educational journeys of future leaders.

Mr & Mrs Normal will start at 18:30. Tickets are R180 each, with discounted rates of R150 per ticket for block bookings of 10 or more. Tickets can be purchased via Webtickets.
A selection of food and drink vendors will be available on the evening, so come early to enjoy a bite before the show or during the interval.

Tribute show to Neil Diamond
Paying respect to the music of legendary artist, composer and performer, Neil Diamond, are Durban’s top tribute band ‘Barry Thomson and The Reals’.
Front man Barry will be on guitar and vocals, musical director Dawn Selby on keyboards and vocals, Mali Sewell on drums and vocals, and talented Robz Millar on bass guitar for the show entitled Diamond Forever: The Music of Neil Diamond at the Northlands Bowling Club on May 17 at 19:30.

Included in this new revamped production are Diamond’s hit songs Cracklin’ Rosie, Song Sung Blue, Longfellow Serenade, America, Sweet Caroline, I’m A Believer and more.

Calling all music lovers
Don’t miss a magnificent afternoon concert of live orchestral music at the NG Kerk in Umhlanga on Saturday, May 17 at 15:00.
The Durban City Orchestra (DCO) will perform a captivating afternoon’s programme of striking melodies from Mozart, Coleridge-Taylor and Mussorgsky along with the debut of a new Spring overture. The concert will showcase the remarkable talents of Tshepo Ntswelengwe performing the Mozart Horn Concerto.

The orchestra, one of the longest running orchestras in the country, has a complement of approximately 30 active members who get together weekly.
The orchestra includes two accomplished professional musicians in Charl van der Merwe as Resident Conductor and Jitske Brien as Concert Master. DCO, which is independent of KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, started as Durban Philharmonic Orchestra and was later known as Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra before it became DCO.

Fun and fabulous ballet
Mzansi Ballet makes a rare trip to Durban to present the fun and fabulous ballet, The Abba Show: A Cinderella Story which blends the music of Abba with the familiar fairytale of Cinderella.
The show will be held at the new Milkwood Theatre in Durban North from Friday, May 16 to Sunday, May 18.
It combines Abba and Cinderella in a delicious marriage of two much loved iconic, timeless, cultural institutions, creating an ingenious blend of sumptuous ballet told to a familiar, hum-along soundtrack. This new version will appeal to all ages, providing a fresh telling of the classic Cinderella story.

The cast includes Mzansi Ballet’s dancers, as well as special guest stars Jorge Wade of Mexico and Ariel Mejica of Cuba. Also featured will be former Playhouse Company dancer, Andrew Gilder, as the Fairy Godmother – a role originally played by Cape Town drag sensation, Cathy Specific.
The Milkwood Theatre is situated at Danville Park Girls’ High School, 21 Middlebrook Avenue, Durban North. The show is scheduled for 19:30 on Friday, May 16; 15:00 and 19:30 on Saturday, May 17; and 15:00 on Sunday, May 18.

There is safe parking on the school field, the entrance to which is via the gate next to the astro on Newport Avenue.
Choir sings for joy while raising funds
The Pinetown Girls’ High School Choir will host a concert at Glenwood Presbyterian Church at 339 Esther Roberts Road, Glenwood, on Saturday, May 17 at 14:30.
Trained, conducted and accompanied by Heather Dix since 1996, the school choir has been going for almost 30 years.

The programme will consist of choral music, both sacred and secular. A few of the girls will also sing solos.
This concert is also a fundraiser for the church. Tickets are R50 and can be booked via Heather on 083 225 8700 or Inge on 031 205 3717 and can be purchased at the door.
The Greatest Dinosaur Show
Port Natal School in Umbilo will host The Greatest Dinosaur Show from Dinomite Events on the school grounds on May 22 and 23.
The exclusive dinosaur event will last for 45 minutes, with queuing times estimated at 15 minutes. Entry costs R60 per learner. To book a stall at the show, email: finansies@portnalschool.co.za.
