Highway women’s guild makes a difference

The Highway Women's Guild is a shining example of community spirit, creativity, and kindness.

THE Highway Women’s Guild is a vibrant community of friendly retired women who share a passion for fellowship, creativity, and giving back.

The group meets once a month at Holy Trinity Church in Nkutu Road, Hillcrest and enjoys teas and delicious eats provided by members on a rotation basis.

The group, started in 2020, is passionate about the community, and charity is an important aspect with knitters making various items with wool.

The guild’s president, Sylvia Easton-Berry, said they send their donations to various NPOs as well as to the Mariannhill Hospital for the premature and children’s wards.

“The blankets are made from knitted squares and distributed to the elderly when needed. We are a happy group and we invite people to join us; you can make new friends or learn a new craft.”

Easton-Berry said they also have voluntary competitions at every meeting.

“We host competitions on various categories; handicraft, horticulture, floral art, craft and home-made items such as baking. There is no obligation to enter. We have external judges that give insights and helpful feedback,” she said.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
