WATCH: Resident feels trapped in own home by sewer spill
For the past three weeks, this homeowner says she has had sewage spilling from a neighbour's septic tank flowing into her yard, right in front of her kitchen door.
A MARIANNRIDGE resident said she feels helpless and trapped in her own home by an ongoing sewer spill which has not been fixed for the past three weeks.
The sewer spill comes from a neighbour’s overflowing septic tank, down her perimeter wall into her dog kennel, past her kitchen door, to the side of her home and further down into the front side of her residence.
“Even the dog cannot use its kennel anymore,” said the affected resident, Pat Parker, who is concerned about the health risk this poses.
Last Saturday, after lodging a call with the eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit, some work was done on the sewer but by Sunday the overflow had resumed.
The temporary fixes, explained Parker, are the only constant, whilst a permanent solution is yet to be realised.

Parker said it is suspected that a blocked pipe is the cause of the messy situation.
@caxtonlocalmedia TRAPPED by a sewer spill! A Mariannridge resident says raw sewage has been flowing past her kitchen door and into her dog’s kennel for three weeks, and still no permanent fix. She’s received four reference numbers and countless promises… but the mess just keeps coming back. 🧼🚫 “We’re trapped in our own home,” she says, and her disabled son is suffering too. 📲 Will the municipality step in before it’s too late? #caxtondurban #highwaymail #Mariannridge #SewerSpill #DurbanNews #eThekwiniFail #TikTokNewsSA #ServiceDeliveryCrisis ♬ original sound – caxtonlocalmedia
She also complained that calls to the municipality sometimes go unanswered until the line ends and that when using the WhatsApp option to lodge a complaint she only gets reference numbers, with four of these issued to her so far.
Parker said attempts to contact the local councillor via social media were unsuccessful.
“We are trapped in our own home,” said Parker, who added that the situation has been an additional challenge for her son who lives with a disability.
The municipality was yet to respond to the Highway Mail’s media enquiry.
