Police say the arrest was made after they had received information about a woman who had been screaming for help in Westville North after the woman was robbed by two suspects who used knives to threaten her.

THE Westville SAPS station commander, Colonel Sharon Zamantungwa Sihlangu, has applauded the station’s crime prevention team for their swift response, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect believed to have been targeting and tormenting workers en route to work in the mornings.

The team arrested an armed robbery suspect at around 06.30 on Friday.

The station’s communication officer, Captain Elizabeth Squires, said the arrest was made after the team had received information about a woman who had been screaming for help in Westville North

“Members immediately proceeded to the scene of the crime, where it was discovered that she was robbed by two suspects who used knives to threaten her, pointing towards her waist and neck, and had robbed her of her handbag and cellphone and thereafter fled towards M19.

“Westville Crime Prevention members, together with Inkosi and Mzansi security, gave chase and successfully apprehended one suspect who was found with the knife in his possession, and seconds later, the victim positively identified him as one of the suspects that robbed her,” said Squires.

Squires said the 25-year-old suspect was detained at the Westville Police Station for armed robbery and added that investigations will continue.

“A search is still underway for the second suspect,” said Squires.
