Gillitts NPO helps clear unmaintained spot

The Gillitts 2 Community Network (G2), a registered NPO, has taken steps to rejuvenate the area in front of the Emberton Reservoir on Old Main Road in Gillitts. This spot had become an eyesore and a potential hiding spot for criminals.

THE verge in front of the Emberton Reservoir on Old Main Road, Gillitts, had not only become an eyesore but was welcoming uninvited guests and making it easy for criminals to hide.

To rejuvinate the area, the Gillitts 2 Community Network (G2) approached the Parks Department and applied to “adopt the spot”.

The Gillitts 2 Community Network (G2) is a registered NPO and volunteer organisation for community benefit which has been in operation for more than 10 years.

PRO of the NPO committee, Neil Pearce, said this stretch of verge has over the last few years been poorly maintained.

“It used to be a pleasant walkway for residents and commuters alike, however the area has become increasingly unsafe with individuals using it to loiter behind the overgrown shrubs to consume alcohol and sometimes using it to camp overnight; it was also becoming a health hazard with excessive deposits of litter and human waste strewn across the area,” said Pearce.

The Gillitts 2 Community Network (G2) approached the Parks Department and has been granted approval to adopt the spot and has committed to maintaining the area.

“We have undertaken an initial clean-up where the overgrown shrubs have been substantially cut back and the area brush cut, thus opening up the space and removing the opportunity for instances of loitering and illicit behavior.”

According to Pearce, maintenance of the area will be an ongoing commitment by the Gillitts 2 Community Network (G2).

“The initiative offers an opportunity for individuals, complexes and businesses in the vicinity to voluntarily assist in committing to its care and enhancement with the shared goal of maintaining our suburb and its natural beauty,” he said.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
