Hillcrest High Angel Fund sparkles

The school raised funds in the region of R35 000 from the tea.

HILLCREST High School’s Angel Fund Tea for women, which was held on Saturday to raise funds to support learners, was a successful event.

Some guests walked away with fantastic prizes.

These included a two-night stay at Leopard Lodge near St Lucia to the value of R7000, vouchers from Watercrest Mall, Mugg and Bean, and Mozambik restaurant, and hampers donated by Lindt and the Ladybird Foundation.

Each guest also received two jam-packed goodie bags with lots of little treats, all donated by the Angel Fund’s network of donors, and enjoyed a delicious harvest table style breakfast.

Comedian Carvin Goldstone was the guest speaker, and he had the audience in fits of laughter as he regaled them with stories of his heritage, his first experiences of suburbia, and community WhatsApp groups.

The Angel Fund is an organisation led by the school’s social worker Sharmila Kowlesur and Deputy Head: Academics, Carol Edy.

The fund is made up of a select group of learners who fundraise throughout the year in support of their peers who come from families experiencing financial challenges.

The support includes uniforms, school stationery, and where possible, lunches and food.

‘Denim and Diamonds’ fundraiser

The theme for this year’s tea was ‘Denim and Diamonds’ and guests were challenged to dress to the theme to stand a chance to win prizes.

In her welcome address, school principal Denise Knight said the gathering was for celebrating “the strength, sparkle, and spirit” of the guests, women, and that the theme was “a reflection of who we are”.

“Denim represents resilience, reliability, and everyday strength. It’s the fabric of hard work – the kind worn by women who show up, who care deeply, who carry the weight of families, classrooms, and communities with grace and grit. Diamonds, on the other hand, symbolise brilliance, beauty, and uniqueness. Each of you shines in your own way, whether it’s through nurturing a child, inspiring a student, supporting a friend, or simply being your authentic self.

“Together, denim and diamonds remind us that women are both strong and radiant. We are practical and glamorous, grounded and graceful. And today, we celebrate all those facets of womanhood,” said Knight.

The principal thanked the Angel Fund committee for all their hard work, dedication and commitment that went into organising the fundraiser.

“I would also like to extend our thanks to all our sponsors and supporters that have contributed – whether it was donating gifts to raffle, assisting with flowers, decorations, making or donating goodies for the goodie bags, every single contribution has been received and appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for being here and for your contributions. Together, we can uplift our community and remind everyone that they too are worthy of love, respect, and support,” said Knight.
