Two suspects found with municipal copper cables arrested for tampering
Police say municipal copper cables were recovered along with tools used to steal them from the poles nearby.
THE Westville SAPS crime prevention team arrested cable theft suspects for the offence of tampering with infrastructure on Spine Road, Westville.
The police station’s communications officer, Captain Elizabeth Squires, confirmed the arrests made on Sunday, September 21 at around 18:00.
Squires said members of the crime prevention team noticed two suspects carrying long lengths of copper cables, running down Spine Road in Westville towards Chesterville.

“When they were stopped by the police, both males ran into the Pavilion Shopping Centre. Members immediately gave chase on foot and successfully apprehended both of them as well as recovered the municipal copper cables along with tools used to steal the copper cables from the poles nearby.
“It was later established that both males had stolen the cables from Spine Road in Westville and were making their way to sell it before they were swiftly apprehended by the police.
“Both males, ages 34 and 38 years old, were arrested for tampering with infrastructure and detained at Westville SAPS for further investigation,” said Squires.
