Light at the end of the tunnel following community meeting

A ward committee member says it is hoped that by December interventions would see an improvement in the supply of electricity in Ward 103.

A COMMUNITY meeting was held last Thursday, October 16, to discuss the persistent power outages in Ward 103.

The meeting was preceded by a peaceful demonstration against the same issue, including water, led by the DA.

DA PR councillor Mxolisi Khubisa said the party was calling for urgent infrastructure upgrades to ensure basic services are delivered.

Khubisa said eThekwini Municipality officials told residents that it is estimated that in six months the situation would have improved.

“What I appreciated is that the entire team was present at the meeting, from the head of the department to the deputy,” said Khubisa.

Attempts to reach the area’s ward councillor, Linda Mchunu who also attended the meeting, have been unsuccessful.

Ward committee member Justice Mduduzi Mfeka said it was learned at the meeting that two LV cables need to be upgraded.

Mfeka said that another issue in Botha’s Hill is that on windy days, trees touch electricity power cables. He added that this week some of the trees will be cut.

“That meeting came at the right time and a way forward was given, we have great hope that by December we will have less electricity issues,” said Mfeka, who explained that these power outages tend to peak during the festive season.

He said a back up LV cable is being installed at Assagay, an area where residents have also bemoaned the frequent outages.
