Investigation after mom, daughter killed in Pinetown crash

Pinetown police are investigating a tragic head-on collision on Richmond Road that claimed the lives of a mother and her six-year-old daughter.

PINETOWN police are investigating a horrific head-on crash which occurred on the evening of October 15 along Richmond Road near Trafford Road, Westmead, Pinetown.

A family of four was travelling in one vehicle, from which a mother and six-year-old daughter died.

On the day of the incident ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that paramedics found two badly damaged vehicles which had collided head-on, leaving two people severely entrapped in their vehicle.

“Immediately the eThekwini Fire Department was dispatched to assist. Together with Redline Response Rescue the firefighters used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to extricate the two.”

Pinetown SAPS spokesperson Jennifer Naidu said the family were travelling in a white VW Polo when their vehicle collided with a white Isuzu bakkie that veered into their lane.

“Tragically, the six-year-old girl died at the scene, and the mother passed away at Westville Hospital on Friday, October 17. The father was discharged from hospital on Sunday, October 19, but is still unable to walk.

“The four-year-old child sustained an injury resulting in the loss of an upper tooth, with the full extent of injuries still being assessed as formal interviews with the family have not been conducted yet, as they are not ready,” reported Naidu.

The driver of the second vehicle, the Isuzu, is  in ICU at a Durban hospital.

“The Investigating Officer is examining all available footage and is in the process of obtaining additional CCTV material to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash,” said Naidu.
