Rough ride for Kassier Road motorists

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says the construction work on the road commenced in October 2022 and it is anticipated that it should be complete by December 2026 at a price tag of R352m.

AS road users bemoan the poor state of certain sections of Kassier Road the eThekwini Municipality said that the project has different phases which are at various stages of completion.

One resident said the two opposing lanes of the road on the way to the new Westown Square running along the mushroom farm are riddled with potholes he believes are caused by the heavy construction vehicles present in the area as road works continue.

“It is unacceptable to drive on a road like that, the road is rotten,” said the resident who added he believes that the state of the road will negatively impact business at the new mall.

According to Sisilana, phase 1A is the section of the road from the N3 to Westown Boulevard, which she said “is complete with snagging underway. The road is open to traffic”.

Phase 1B, she said, is the section of the road from the N3 to the M13 and it is divided into three phases, which are Phase 1B1, Phase 1B2, and Phase 1B3.

“Phase 1B1 from the N3 to the Engen Garage is a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. This section is complete and open to traffic. Phase 1B2 is the eastbound carriageway of Kassier Road, from the Engen garage to the M13, and is nearing completion with asphalt, tar, to be placed. This section also includes the new bridge over the M13 which is also complete.

“Phase 1B3 is the westbound carriageway, from the M13 to the Engen garage. This section is still under construction with anticipated completion being December 2026. The carriageway and new bridge are to be done,” said Sisilana.
