COMPETING for the first time in the Sasol Skills Competition, which highlights excellence in Technical and Artisan subjects, Hillcrest High School’s Engineering, Graphics and Design (EGD) department made the school proud.
The competition, which comprises three levels, district, provincial, and national, includes both learners and teachers competing in two categories: Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) and traditional Instrument Drawing.

Educators Andrew Burger and Telise Tonkin accompanied learners Jaryd André and Sebastian Smith (Instrument Drawing). “Finals were held in Johannesburg in October and at this level we are very pleased to announce that Mrs Tonkin achieved an impressive second place, and Grade 11 learner Jaryd André placed third nationally,” said Hillcrest High School principal Denise Knight. “Unfortunately, Mr Burger was unable to attend due to illness, but his contribution leading up to the finals was instrumental in the success of the team. These results mark a huge success for Hillcrest High School and its growing reputation in technical education.”
The Hillcrest High School EGD Department, headed by Tonkin, looks forward to competing in more competitions in the future.
