Bail ruling due for man accused of killing Pinetown mother

The Pinetown Magistrate’s Court will deliver its decision on the bail bid of a man accused of murdering his partner.

THE final decision in the bail application of the man who allegedly stabbed his lover to death in Pinetown is set to be delivered by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 28.

Babongile Nkonyeni’s (35) sister, Sindi Shezi, took the witness stand at the court on Tuesday to testify that she will be capable of caring for the eight-year-old child of the deceased and the accused, Sikhumbuzo Zungu (43).

Shezi previously said that the child has commenced counselling sessions.

Nkonyeni’s family has maintained that Zungu should not be granted bail as they fear for their safety and believe that he has not shown remorse since he began attending court.

Shezi said the family is of the view that what further justifies why Zungu should be denied bail is that after he allegedly stabbed her sister to death, he left the scene and returned to it later in the day, and that he was arrested only two days after the incident.

Zungu was arrested on Tuesday, October 28, after the Sunday, October 26 murder of Nkonyeni at about 03:00 at a residence on Glenridge Road in Pinetown.

The family came to know of Babongile’s murder on that Sunday evening.

“He does not deserve bail. What if he gets out and comes and finishes the rest of the family off? We do not know what is going through his mind,” Shezi said previously.

Zungu faces an additional charge of theft because at the time of his arrest, he was allegedly found in possession of two cellphones belonging to Babongile. Babongile’s mother, Sibongile Shezi, said that she has learnt that the relationship between her daughter and Zungu was strained, but would not speculate on whether that was the cause of the murder.
