Theft out of motor vehicle suspects arrested after high speed chase in Westville

Two suspects linked to theft-out-of-motor-vehicle cases in the Westville and Upper Highway area were arrested this week after police observed a suspicious silver Ford Figo with fake number plates leaving Westville North Spar.

TWO suspects who police believe are linked to several theft-out-of-motor-vehicle cases in the Upper Highway area, particularly Westville, were arrested this week.

Westville SAPS communications officer Captain Elizabeth Squires said members of the SAPS Westville Crime Prevention Unit observed a suspicious silver Ford Figo with two male occupants leaving the Westville North Spar.

According to Squires, the vehicle was fitted with number plates registered to a white Hyundai.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle for further investigation, the driver accelerated, resulting in a high speed chase through the Westville North area.

“Officers successfully cornered the vehicle, bringing the chase to an end, and both occupants were apprehended.

“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a signal-blocking device (remote jammer), car break-in implements, and the original number plates belonging to the Ford Figo.”

Squires said that in Westville theft-out-of-motor-vehicle cases have been on the increase.

“These incidents involve theft of laptops, high-value cellphones, and other valuables. Both suspects were arrested and detained at Westville SAPS for possession of a signal-blocking device in contravention of the Electronic Communications Act, and for possession of car break-in implements. Further investigations are underway,” reported Squires.
