Toy drive brings joy to abused survivors
Legal Aid SA’s KZN Toy Drive brings hope, joy and comfort to vulnerable children supported by the Open Door Crisis Care Centre.
THE Open Door Crisis Care Centre was over the moon to be chosen as a beneficiary in the Legal Aid South Africa, KZN Provincial Toy Drive initiative.
The NPO, which is a beacon of hope for abused victims, was started in 1997 by Thora Mansfield at the request of the local SAPS to assist women and children who were victims of rape and domestic violence after seeing the work she did, working and helping women in township areas.
The centre reaches out to the homeless, victims of trafficking, the broken hearted, the abused and abandoned children or women who face violence daily.

Mansfield thanked Legal Aid SA for choosing to make a difference in the lives of the children the NPO serves.
“Your kindness has brought joy, comfort and hope to the children we serve. Thank you,” she said.
The staff from Legal Aid collected toys and books for children in need, heeding a call from the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.
The national campaign, initiated by Minister Mamoloko Kubayi, encouraged organisations within the justice cluster to give back and bring hope to the most vulnerable.
“I have decided to initiate a campaign to collect toys and books for children and donate them to centres and facilities that support survivors of gender-based violence and femicide.
“This follows my visits to various courts and facilities that support children who are survivors, where I found a lack of toys and books. Often, these children lack access to the simple joys of childhood and opportunities that foster learning, comfort and healing,” said the minister.
Lungile Magoso, KZN Provincial Executive, said the handover of the collected items was aligned with the national commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, underscoring Legal Aid SA’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and raising awareness about their rights and safety.
“Legal Aid South Africa is rooted in service to the community. Through this donation, our employees have once again demonstrated compassion and commitment to improving the lives of those who need it most.”
