City to discipline workers arrested for driving under the influence

Disciplinary action has been taken against three employees arrested for drunk driving while operating municipal vehicles.

THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against the three employees who were arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The spokesperson for the Durban Metro Police, which made the arrests, Colonel Victor Zungu, said one of the employees was arrested on the M25 on Sunday, February 1, and was detained at the Ntuzuma SAPS.

Zungu said the other two municipal workers were arrested on Inanda Road (Parlock) and were detained at Newlands SAPS, also on Sunday.

All three had been driving marked municipal vehicles at the time of their arrests, according to the metro police.

The municipality’s spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said on Tuesday that disciplinary action will be taken against the three employees.

“The municipal policy strictly prohibits the operation of council vehicles under the influence of alcohol,” said Sisilana.

She clarified that some employees are authorised to make use of municipal vehicles after hours and that those are mainly workers who are required to work shifts, overtime or who are on standby.

“The unauthorised use of municipal vehicles constitutes misconduct, and any employee found to be in violation of this policy is subjected to disciplinary action in line with the municipality’s disciplinary code,” said Sisilana.

The metro police had said that two of the employees are from the Water and Sanitation Department and one of them is an intern from the Economic Development Department.
