Forest Hills Sports Club launches Ice Endurance Challenge

Forest Hills Sports Club’s first Ice Endurance Challenge saw contestants brave 4°C water in a Valentine’s Day showdown.

THE Forest Hills Sports Club made a bold splash this Valentine’s Day with the launch of its first-ever Ice Endurance Challenge — a fun, high-spirited event designed as a trial run to gauge community interest.

What organisers didn’t anticipate was just how “cool” the community would prove to be.

With water temperatures sitting at a brisk 4 degrees Celsius, contestants were given a 5-minute cut-off time for safety and structure. Much to everyone’s surprise, participants coped remarkably well in the icy conditions. A staggering 87% of contestants reached the 5-minute mark, leaving organisers with an unexpected dilemma — how to determine first, second and third place when nearly everyone conquered the challenge.

In the end, and not without debate, it was agreed that a coin-flip would decide the winners. Not ideal at all — but certainly a lesson learnt! Organisers have already confirmed that the next event will have no time limit, with additional ice being added every 30 seconds after the five-minute mark to ensure clear and undisputed winners.

Among the clear “polar bears” of the day were Denham Fosteras, Mark Beeton and Arran van der Merwe, who demonstrated exceptional endurance. To prove a point, Beeton and Van der Merwe volunteered for a second round. In an impressive display of resilience, Beeton lasted 22 minutes, while Van der Merwe pushed even further, enduring 23 minutes in the icy water.

The event was supported by local sponsors. Joops Place & Joitas sponsored a romantic dinner for two valued at R1 100 as the first prize. Seeff Property sponsored a Valentine’s basket for second place, while Dr Duffey of the Link Hills Medical Centre sponsored a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers for third place. Mugg & Bean Watercrest sponsored cool vouchers as spot prizes.

Additional support from AmbiLube, DuWalcoe and Vision Verification contributed towards essential event logistics, including contestant towels, ice tubs, the ice itself, and the rental of a mobile fridge truck to keep everything perfectly chilled. Red Line Response kept a watchful eye on the well-being of the contestants.

The overwhelming participation and enthusiastic crowd response confirmed strong community interest, turning what began as a trial initiative into what promises to become a much-anticipated annual event on the Forest Hills calendar.

If this year was anything to go by, Forest Hills is home to some seriously cool competitors — and next year’s challenge is already set to raise the stakes.
