Update: Police seek assistance after Westville deadly shooting

South African Police Service in Westville have appealed for public assistance following the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Sbonelo Mkhwanazi.

WESTVILLE SAPS has appealed to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of suspects involved in the murder of Sbonelo Mkhwanazi.

The 36-year-old civil engineer was shot and killed in broad daylight on Tuesday (February 17) at the corner of Menston Road and Buckingham Terrace Road in Westville.

According to communications officer Sergeant Zwelethu Khathi, Mkhwanazi had just left a nearby shopping centre and stopped at a traffic light when occupants of a white vehicle allegedly approached him.

“It is reported that the suspects opened fire multiple times before fleeing the scene,” said Khathi. “A docket of murder was opened and police are investigating. At this stage, there are no confirmed leads or identified suspects.”

Police believe that, given the incident occurred in a busy central area, motorists, pedestrians or nearby businesses may have witnessed the shooting, noted the vehicle’s registration number, or observed suspicious activity.

The Westville CPF extended condolences to Mkhwanazi’s family and loved ones. In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the CPF urged residents and business owners to review CCTV footage from the time of the incident and share any potentially useful information with authorities.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Westville SAPS communications on 079 889 9586 or call Crime Stop on 10111.
