Veteran GP thanks community as he relocates

After more than two decades serving the Upper Highway community, Dr Stephen Carpenter is preparing to say goodbye as he leaves Medicross Pinetown at the end of May.

Born in Durban in 1963 and raised in Kempton Park, Carpenter qualified as a doctor through the University of the Witwatersrand in 1986. Over the years, his career has been guided by a deep passion for caring for vulnerable and marginalised communities.

Much of his early medical work was spent practising rural medicine in the North West province between 1991 and 2003. After relocating to Botha’s Hill in 2003, he continued dedicating his career to community-focused healthcare, working in HIV care at St Mary’s Hospital and later at Don McKenzie Hospital, where he worked in TB care for several years. In 2005, Carpenter completed a degree in palliative care through University of Cape Town, further strengthening his commitment to compassionate end-of-life care.

Since joining Medicross Pinetown in 2018, he has become well known for caring for elderly and frail patients at retirement and nursing homes across the Pinetown area. Alongside his private practice, he also volunteered weekly at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust hospice ward and at the Denis Hurley Centre clinic serving Durban’s homeless community.

Now, Carpenter and his wife are relocating to the Swellendam area in the Western Cape to be closer to family in Cape Town, especially ahead of the arrival of twin granddaughters in July. Although scaling down toward retirement, he hopes to continue part-time work in community clinics. “I am deeply grateful to the people of the Upper Highway area for the privilege of being able to serve them over the last 23 years,” he said.

” Dr Carpenter is happy to commend his patients to the ongoing care of his colleagues at Medicross Pinetown – Drs Vishal Seevnarain, Asanda Matshoba, Frank Achampong, Darnae Santos and  Keshran Thaver- our computerized system allows seamless use of notes and reports “
