Pinetown man sentenced after chickens found in horrific conditions
The man convicted of animal cruelty was ordered to pay R10 000 to the Kloof and Highway SPCA as compensation.
JUSTICE was served for chickens that were found in unimaginable conditions at a property in Pinetown.
The owner, who admitted that the chickens had been sick for some time and made the deliberate decision to stop feeding them altogether, received a 12–month prison sentence, wholly suspended for five years, on condition of no further offences.
The court also ruled that the man was declared unfit to own or care for animals for 10 years.

He was also ordered to pay R10 000 to the Kloof and Highway SPCA as compensation.
The Kloof and Highway SPCA manager Barbara Patrick said on February 8, 2024, Inspector Petra Abrams responded to a complaint from a concerned member of the public reporting an overpowering smell of death at a property in Pinetown.
“Upon arrival, Inspector Abrams was met with a horrific scene. Inside a garage, dozens of chickens were found in unimaginable conditions! Forced to live amongst decomposing carcasses; bones scattered underfoot, and surviving birds left to starve.
“With no food, some chickens had resorted to eating the remains of the dead in a desperate attempt to survive. Many were critically ill, unable to move, and suffering immensely,” said Patrick.
Due to the extent of suffering, SPCA Inspectors humanely euthanised 52 chickens to end their pain.
Patrick said the case highlights the devastating reality of neglect, but also the power of action, accountability, and justice.
“This is a victory for every voiceless animal who suffers in silence. And we want to make one thing clear: We will never stop fighting for animals,” assured Patrick.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA thanked the Prosecutor, Investigating Officer Ncamisile Ndimande, the Magistrate, and the team who ensured that justice was served for these chickens.
“This case is the first in KwaZulu-Natal where animal cruelty to chickens has resulted in a successful conviction.”
Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu commended Detective Constable Ndimande for her dedication, professionalism and perseverance in ensuring that justice was served in this animal cruelty case.

“Detective Constable Ndimande has a genuine heart for animals, and her commitment to protecting those who cannot speak for themselves shows in her investigations.
“The sentence imposed by the court sends a clear message that cruelty and neglect of animals are serious offences and will not be tolerated. The South African Police Service appeals to the community to treat all animals with care, compassion and responsibility,” said Naidu.
