IT was a bittersweet moment for Dennis Ntinga as he bid farewell to the place he served with dignity, dedication and pride for 45 years.

Ntinga (65), a trusted and beloved gardener, began working at Nqutu Park Hillcrest in 1981.

“I worked at one unit while I was still in school,” he recalled.
After completing matric, Ntinga said he told his employer at the time that he was looking for full-time work.

“He asked me to stay because there was going to be a full-time position for a gardener. I have always been passionate about gardening, and I guess he did not want to lose me,” Ntinga said with a smile.

The Ntshongweni resident said that although the work was never-ending, he loved every moment of it.

“I have connected and worked well with everyone here. People who were living here when I first started are no longer here, but the warmth is still the same. Nothing has changed, and I would choose this job all over again.”

Asked what he would miss the most, Ntinga paused before replying: “I cannot pinpoint just one thing. I grew up here. I will miss every single thing and every single person.”

He believes the reason he remained with one employer for so many years is because of the values he was taught while growing up in a rural area.

“Respect in life takes you far. I respect every single person. I have never fought with anyone here. I was here to work, and I can confidently say I did my job with pride, honesty and dedication.

“Many people worked here for a few years and then left. One thing I have learnt in life is that the grass is not always greener on the other side.”

Ntinga also carried out maintenance work and painting when needed.

The father of two said he is looking forward to enjoying his retirement and marrying his partner of 10 years.

Jenny Micklewood, who is in charge of the gardeners, said Nqutu Park was one of the first complexes to be built in Hillcrest.

“There were very few trees, hedges or fences. Hedges have been established and maintained, trees planted and the units were individually fenced, changing some of the parameters of Dennis’ gardening duties, all carried out with a smile and courtesy.

“Dennis has been responsible for assisting in establishing the common property and individual unit gardens over the years, under the guidance of some of our keen resident gardeners,” said Micklewood.

He has been a mentor for other staff who have been employed, guiding them in the quirks of the complex.

Describing Ntinga, Micklewood said Dennis is a true gentleman who arrives for work immaculately dressed, carrying his briefcase.

“At the end of a long working day, come rain or shine, Dennis would take a much-deserved hot shower, after the other staff had departed, and make himself a hot cup of rooibos tea, which he enjoyed in the peace of the early evening, prior to departing for home. We will sorely miss his quiet demeanour, love of animals and great sense of humour.

“All who live in Nqutu Park wish him a restful retirement at his home in Shongweni surrounded by his extended family.”
