eThekwini introduces smart metering system to reduce billing errors
eThekwini's mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda said he was confident that the new smart meter system will eradicate billing errors.
TO reduce the number of exorbitant water and electricity bills complaints received, the eThekwini Municipality launched a new smart metering system.
During the launch, the City’s mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda said this will reduce glitches in the billing system.

He noted that the system provides two-way communication between the customer and the municipality.
“The launch of the smart metering system will ensure that residents are not unfairly billed,” he said.
Kaunda said the system will address the City’s billing system as well as prevent electricity and water theft.

“It will also enhance our revenue collection and enable meter readings to be automatically uploaded. The City is currently rolling out this programme to its more than 700 000 customers,” he said.
The mayor also unveiled the new Cleansing and Solid Waste fleet that, he said, would assist with addressing the City’s waste management challenges, in line with the municipality’s sustainable waste management plan.
