Years of hard work pays off for Malvern SAPS detective

After more than 30 years at Malvern SAPS, Detective Warrant Officer Jeffrey Ngcobo is still driven by putting criminals behind bars. Recently, he secured a 15-year conviction for a robber terrorising shoppers.

DETECTIVE Warrant Officer Jeffrey Ngcobo has worked at Malvern SAPS for more than three decades and says it gives him great pleasure when criminals are convicted because it shows that he does his job diligently.

“Getting a criminal convicted does not happen overnight. A lot of work and investigation goes into it, as well as giving strong testimony with evidence in court,” he said.

Ngcobo made these remarks after being recognised for securing a 15-year conviction against a man who had been terrorising shoppers around a local shopping centre, robbing them of their valuables.

The accused received two separate 15-year sentences for robbery, which will run concurrently.

Ngcobo, who takes pride in his work as a police officer, said he joined the police service in 1992.

Growing up, he said he hated crime and seeing people being abused or bullied.

“At that time I was still young and could not do anything, but I vowed that I would make it my mission to protect South African citizens,” said the husband and father of five.

Having worked at the same station for many years, Ngcobo said he is familiar with and cares deeply for the community to which he has dedicated most of his life.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
