Thomas Moore College crowned cricket champs
Thomas Moore College are the champs of the Kloof High School Cricket Festival.
THOMAS Moore College were crowned champions at the Kloof High School Cricket Festival on Saturday 14 September.
The tournament has been in existence in some form or other for more than three decades and is a highlight on the school’s pre-season cricketing calendar.
At present the festival is a quadrangular tournament involving Hillcrest High School, St Henry’s Marist Brothers College, Thomas More College and the hosts Kloof High School.
With last year’s event having been rained out, the teams were eager to see who could go the distance in 2013.
The hosts were defending the title but the competition would be tough with each school having had a decent first half of the cricket season in term one.
The day’s proceedings were kicked off with a random draw for the first round matches, with Kloof facing up to St Henry’s while Hillcrest would play Thomas More.
In the final between Thomas More and Kloof, Thomas More batted first after winning the toss and posted a very competitive 137-8 despite having been 90-7 after 15 overs.
Kloof battled to keep up with the run rate and lost wickets at regular intervals in pursuit of the cause. Ultimately they were 71 all out after Thomas More had bowled very tight.
Travis Preston (3-8) had done the bulk of the damage and was the day’s best bowler with figures of 5-25 in the two games.
Kloof High School public relations manager Barbara Forbes congratulated Thomas More for being the 2013 winners of the festival.
“It is with much anticipation that we await the 2014 festival,” said Forbes.
