Andrew takes roaring win
With a few months out of the sport, Andrew was excited to climb back into the ring.
LION’S Den SA MMA fighter, Andrew Caruth, nabbed another win at a fight at Sibaya Casino’s MFC 71 event recently.
In his last fight for the year, the Hillcrest resident competed in the featherweight class and took on the title hopeful, Ronald van Heerden. Even though he was unable to take part in the sport for six months due to surgery on his right arm, the entire fight lasted 41 seconds. “I wasn’t playing games. I went in to win and to win quickly,” said Andrew. He received a gold trophy to mark his achievement in the fight.
Unable to compete in the sport or train for six months was too long a stretch for Andrew, so he started training again after four months, but he admitted that is was very light exercise. Once he was fully recovered, he stepped up his training regime 10 weeks prior to the competition. “I tightened my diet and trained six days a week, between one to three hours a session, twice a day. There were so many big sacrifices I had to make, like sugar and bread,” laughed Andrew.
His main goal for next year is to win the ProAm featherweight title.
