Shriya celebrates glorious bronze victory at World Cup

Shriya Misra represented SA at the WKF World Cup in Umag, Croatia recently and was ranked number one in the kumite U12 division and third in the World Cup.

MARTIAL artist, Bruce Lee, once said: “Even today, I dare not say that I have reached a state of achievement. I’m still learning, for learning is boundless.”

And 10 years on, the learning process for South Africa’s first ranked Karate champion, Shriya Misra, continues. Misra is number one in the kumite U21 division and was selected to participate in the WKF World Youth Cup in Umag, Croatia from 28 June to 6 July.

Stressful studying for university exams, club training and a gruelling training camp preceded a glorious bronze victory in kumite. Taking third position in a world cup is backed by lots of sacrifice from both athletes and supporters alike.

Shriya’s love for the art of karate under the tutelage of SKISA has seen her blossom into a first Dan black belt. She also has her Protea colours and is the official coach for UKZN Westville Karate Club. She practices her karate during the week under the watchful eye of the Protea coach, sensei Brando Pillay, at the Future Champs Academy based at the Westville Civic Centre.

Shriya said: “Sensei Brando Pillay and Hanshi Sonny Pillay have always supported and guided me throughout my karate career. I also owe a debt of gratitude to my parents for everything they have done for me throughout.”

Back home, Shriya is revelling in her achievement – but also cherishes the amazing experience of being a part of the South African team, participating in an international tournament, meeting athletes from all over the world and forging lasting friendships.

With feet firmly on the ground (when not in the air), Shriya is sure to continue making her family, friends, club and country proud.
