KEARSNEY College enjoyed action-packed matches in rugby and soccer at the weekend.

Kearsney had two U18 teams competing at the Voortrekker 7s rugby tournament in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. The A team were unbeaten in their three pool matches beating Hillcrest 31-0, Ladysmith 31-5 and Pionier 31-14. Kearsney B beat Carter 48-17 and Creston 31-7 but lost 10-5 to Westville.

Both teams qualified for the quarter finals. Kearsney A beat Pionier B comfortably 42-5, but the B side lost a closely-contested match to Voortrekker 24-12.

Kearsney A then had Voortrekker for the semi-final and were clinical in their performance in wet conditions beating them 14-5.

In the final Kearsney A faced Pionier A. This time around Pionier were more disciplined and more accurate than the Kearsney team and were eventual winners 17-7. In the A side James Sutherland and Greg van Noordwyk were Kearsney’s outstanding players while Brendan Albertse and Reece Daniel made valuable contributions for the Kearsney B side.

In soccer news, Kearsney 1st beat Clifton 1st 2-1. Kearsney started the game with plenty of enthusiasm and scored quickly through a long range shot from striker, Kyle Koenig. Soon afterwards a cross from the left allowed Luke de Vlieg to slot Kearsney’s second goal. Both sides had chances but neither was able to capitalise.

After the half time break, Clifton, came out the stronger side and scored through a solo run by the striker who left the Kearsney keeper no chance. Clifton continued to pressurise the Kearsney defence, but were unable to break through, and the game ended 2-1 to Kearsney.

In their mid-week game, Kearsney College and Thomas More College’s first teams drew the match at 2-2.
