Sporty Brett rakes in awards
Kloof Senior Primary School's Grade 7 learner, Brett Kliegl, hopes to be a part of the Cell C Sharks team one day.
KLOOF Senior Primary School’s immensely talented sports star, Brett Kliegl, who is equally humble, raked in a slew of awards at the school’s recent prize giving ceremony.
The 13-year-old was proud to admit he took part in as many sporting activities as he could fit into his schedule, but his preference would always lie with rugby.
“Ive always had a passion for it. It was also one of the first sports I ever really played properly. I enjoy the tackling, running into a tackle but then again it is also a thinking game as it is very quick moving. I love every little bit of it,” he said.
He also received a headmaster’s full scholarship for sporting excellence at Westville Boys’ High School next year.
Brett is a firm Cell C Sharks supporter and also throws his backing behind the Springboks. “Even in their low moments,” he said.
One of his top moments as a rugby player was making the U13 for Craven Week and hopes to be a part of the team for both the U16 and U18 sides.
“I couldn’t believe that I was chosen. I missed out on the team last year so I chose to put my head down and worked towards it. When they called my name I just lit up. I may have even shouted out,” he laughed.
While the local U13 team were not victorious at the competition, Brett said that putting on The Sharks’ jersey for the first time could only be described as ‘awesome’.
At Kloof Senior Primary School he plays cricket, hockey, soccer and is a member of the athletics team. He is the captain for touch rugby and the vice captain for cricket. In high school his aims are to make the A teams for both rugby and cricket and, should no other sports clash with his schedule, he will add a few more sports onto the list.
At the school’s evening of excellence, Brett walked away with seven awards and 14 certificates including Rugby player of the year, touch rugby player of the year, cricket player of the year, hockey player of the year, victor ludorum for athletics, the athletics long distance champion, the principal’s award, KSP colours for athletics and honours for rugby.
Brett thanked his dad, Steven, for being one of his biggest supporters.
“He takes me to training sessions and taught me the basics and we have just built on it from there. My mom as well, no matter the weather, is on the side of the field supporting me no matter what,” said Brett.
