Kearsney celebrates its sports stars

Kearsney learners competed in the annual Fish River Canoe Marathon, two basketball tournaments and a few of its cricket players were hand-picked for the KZN coastal teams.

Cricket:
Seven Kearsney College learners were selected for the KZN Coastal Cricket teams: U19s Robbie Koenig and Carl Heunis, U17s Jordan Bamber (captain) and Cade Carmichael and U15s Dylan Hulett, Dean Gibbs and Louis Nel.

Basketball:
Kearsney hosted the sixth edition of the Independent Schools’ Stayers Basketball tournament, where 20 teams from the country’s top independent schools participated.

This year, the tremendous growth in the sport was apparent as, after the quarter finals, the games to secure placings were tightly contested with very little separating the teams.
Eventual winners, St Albans College from Pretoria, remained unbeaten, while runners-up St Benedict’s from Johannesburg proved to be worthy finalists, providing an excellent spectacle during the final match of the tournament.

During the holiday, Kearsney’s U14s travelled to the St Andrews Grahamstown basketball festival. The team won all five of their matches for the second year in a row, beating Grey PE, Kingswood College, St Johns College, Clifton College and St Andrews College in the final game of the tournament.

Canoeing:
The Kearsney team travelled to Cradock for a successful weekend’s participation in the annual Fish River Canoe Marathon.

The team enjoyed a day of tripping on the Thursday before the race, providing an opportunity to familiarise paddlers with some of the bigger obstacles they would face on race day.
Jack Lund was Kearsney’s first boat home in 89th place in the k1 race and 7th in the U16s with Kevyn Meyer 119th in the k1 race and 22nd in the U18s.

The team also included three novice paddlers who all completed the 81.8 km race in team boats. Andrew Sebire (Grade 8) paddled in a k3 with Callam Davis (2018 captain) and coach Steve Main.
The top performing Old Boy was Evan Knight who finished in an impressive 39th place in the k1 race.
