Kearsney fares well in final clash

The local College's basketball team narrowly avoided a loss during their final game against Westville Boys' High School.

Basketball:

Kearsney travelled to Westville Boys’ High School for the final basketball fixture of the year. Kearsney started well and was able for find some fluidity on offence and scored freely.

Westville didn’t appear to have an answer for the Kearsney offence, but also scored easily on Kearsney’s defence. Kearsney closed the first quarter 23 – 15.

The second quarter was much the same as Kearsney outscored their opponents, but also allowed easy baskets to be scored against them. Kearsney went into half time with a commanding 43 – 25 lead. There was not much change in the third quarter, with Kearsney comfortably 57 – 46 ahead.

The fourth quarter, however, saw Westville up the tempo as they found their rhythm. Kearsney made defensive errors and allowed Westville to shoot free throws and cut significantly into their lead. The quarter almost saw Kearsney lose a game as with Westville scored 36 points.

Cricket:

In the 1st X1’s weekend fixture, Kearsney lost the toss in overcast and windy conditions and were put in to bat on a belter of a batting track. Initially 1/1, Kearsney recovered beautifully to register a fairly imposing 279/7 (Koenig 55, Carmichael 36, Bamber 47, Talbot 42, Patton 39).

Westville also used the track impressively and reached the target three down with three overs to spare.

It was a truly great batting wicket and the difference was that Kearsney did not convert their great start into more half centuries. Westville managed a great run chase, to deservedly win by seven wickets.
