Tube wave boogie master
Since he started competing five year's ago, Shaun Haage has continued to build on and improve his bodyboarding techniques.
SHAUN Haage recently traded in Durban’s sunny shores for the biting cold of Cape Town’s waters for the South African Bodyboarding Championships, where he snapped up second place in the master’s division.
The Winston Park bodyboarder started surfing at the age of 12 and only started competing for the last five years and competes for the eThekwini Bodyboarding Association.
In the semi finals, he snapped up a win against the competition’s favourite and in the finals he took on his teammate, Brendan Greenaway, event favourite and Cape Winelands Bodyboarding Association Rider, Ryno Turketti and Western Province Bodyboarding Association Surfer, Phillip Le Roux.
“The extra cold water made it very difficult for all the surfers in the water. Coming out of the water after the final, word on the beach was that I probably snuck the win, and I was confident that I had done enough to take the title of South African Masters Champion for 2018,” he said.

It was a close result, but event favourite, Ryno Turketti, took the masters title, Haage came in second and his bodyboarding teammate, Greenaway, took third.
“Unfortunately, the eThekwini Bodyboarding Association were unable retain the Fishman team title this year and we got runner-up,” he said.
“At the end of the day, I think we really showcased how extreme our sport is. Bodyboarding has always taken a backseat to surfing, but the amount of progression in recent years, both locally and on the world tour, has been great to see,” said the proud bodyboarder.
“I couldn’t have done or achieved any of this without the support of my family. They have sacrificed so much as I put in the time necessary to achieve my goals,” he said.
