VIOLINIST, Annamaria D’Andrea, aka ‘Purple Jasmine’, is set to perform at the 31st celebration of the Kloof Rotary Durban Pops at the majestic Durban City Hall this Saturday 15 November at 6.30pm.
The theme for this year’s Kloof Rotary fundraiser, in association with Adapt IT and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, is A Night at the Movies and guests are encouraged to dress formally in black and gold. One of the highlights of the evening is Annamaria’s solo of The Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby, composed by Lennon/ McCarthy and arranged by Walton, on her electric violin.
Annamaria D’Andrea was born in Rome, where she studied at the Conservatory Santa Cecilia. She then completed her studies in viola cum laude, under the supervision of Professor Massimo Paris. She studied music further in Switzerland and in Germany.
She participated in many tours around the world and was honoured to play for the Wagner Festival in Erl with the great Maestro Gustav Kuhn. From 1998 until 2004 she was a violist in the Symphonic Orchestra of Baleares. Since 2006, she is a permanent member of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban. Annamaria is also a founding member of the dynamic Quattro Femmes String Quartet based in Durban, which explores all kinds of music styles from classical to jazz and electronic music with a DJ and electric instruments.
She combines her experience as a professional figure skater, her flair for fashion and design and her love for all kinds of music into a dynamic one-of-a-kind performance of electric viola on rollerskates.
At this year’s Kloof Rotary Durban Pops, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will once again be performing under the able and entertaining conductorship of Richard Cock. Other soloists include, Joanna Franklin on violin, Annalize de Villiers on clarinet and soprano, Natalie Bath. The choirs from Durban Girls’ College and Durban High School will also be performing. Music from the movies, The Mission, Star Wars, Dances with Wolves and the Pirates of the Caribbean are on the music line up for, what promises to be, a wonderful evening of glamour, entertainment and good food – all for a worthy cause.
The Rotary Club of Kloof has made immeasurable contributions to disadvantaged communities and have notably developed many community service projects that address some of the most critical issues that the society is faced with.
