Checkers Mini Collectors share their story

As the Checkers Minis collection recently came to an end, the Highway Mail got to hear from some of the community’s avid collectors.

THE Checkers Mini Collection has gotten everyone in a frenzy. The mini collections are a Checkers initiative where customers who spend more than R200 and swipe the store’s reward card get a mini for free.

With 44 items to collect, this activity is not only for children, but adults have also rolled up their sleeves and collected cases of minis.

To hear what collectors had to say, The Highway Mail spoke to local avid collector Brenda. With two full collectors’ cases, Brenda Jean Smit said she started collecting for her grandchildren from 2016 when the minis debuted.

“When I saw them for the first time, I thought they were so cute and wanted to collect them for my grandchildren. Then I only had one granddaughter with one grandson on the way; they were young, but I collected for them anyway. The second year came around again when they added more items, and then it was a matter of anticipating the next year’s collection,” she said.

Years later, Brenda has now collected all the sets and has given them to her grandchildren. One of her grandchildren, Dreydin, has grown into this and joined his grandmother in collecting the minis.

“We have a full collection, and Dreydin has a spare collection that he plays with as the collections in cases cannot be touched.

While participating in the enjoyment of collecting, Brenda has opened up a WhatsApp group for collectors in the area to have a community. “In the group, we exchange items and sometimes help people with their collections. The group has made this easier for people. I have had people whom I’ve kept swopping with every year.

To strengthen the collection, Brenda said their family strictly shop at Checkers. “Usually, we shop across markets, but with the collection, we strictly shop at Checkers even if it’s just buying bread.”
