New Germany couple celebrate golden anniversary

André and Mary Marx celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

NEW Germany couple, André and Mary Marx, will celebrate their 50th marriage anniversary on November 16 surrounded by friends and family.

They said they feel blessed for reaching this milestone and being able to celebrate it with their loved ones.

André had just returned from the national military service and needed a date for a work function when he was introduced to Mary by his sister.

The couple said they were smitten the very first time they met.

“I could definitely say it was love at first sight; I was taken by her beautiful smile,” said André.

At the time, Mary worked for an audio education department in Pietermaritzburg and André worked in the motor industry.

“We saw each other over weekends. I had a big family, and he would come and assist us at home or take us for a drive as my father worked long hours,” said Mary.

They dated for two years before tying the knot at the Pietermaritzburg North NG Kerk on November 16, 1974, followed by a big reception at PMB Prison Recreation Hall with friends and family.

André jokingly said that after getting married, they were used to sitting next to each other at church but had to make a space between them when their son, Anton, was born in 1976 and again, in 1979, when their daughter Zelna arrived.

“But now they are back to sitting next to each as their children are grown and married,” he said with a smile.

They have four grandchildren whom they say they adore.

After working in Centurion for a number of years, André was transferred to Pinetown where he retired.

“Mary’s health took a knock with a bypass and suffering from a stroke, but by the grace of God, she recovered.”

The lovebirds said they are happy and content with their life as they have the same interests – they are now enjoying their retirement and time together.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
