IEC celebrates women in ECD centres during Women’s Month

The IEC celebrated by recognising and empowering women working in Early Childhood Development centres in Thembisa.

As part of Women’s Month celebrations, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) launched a programme to recognise and appreciate the contributions of women working in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres.

The event took place on August 13 at Motsu Park in Thembisa and aimed to empower these women, who play a vital role in shaping the minds of future generations.

Lucy Kabe, chairperson of the Community Safety Forum, said the department intersects with the work of women in ECD centres by providing training and resources on child protection policies and responding to incidents such as child abuse or neglect.

“ECD centres can be vulnerable to external threats, so child protection and safety is a key area of focus.

“We are working to prevent child abuse and neglect by providing training,” Kabe said.

She added that the Community Safety Department collaborates with the IEC and ECD forums to create safer environments for women in créches, organising community events, workshops, and campaigns promoting both créche safety and women empowerment.

Kabe conveyed a message of appreciation on behalf of the Community Safety Department, acknowledging the tireless efforts of women in nurturing and educating young children.

“We recognise that your work is invaluable and we understand the challenges you face daily,” she said.

She also assured women that their safety and well-being remain a top priority.

“We are committed to supporting you in creating a secure and healthy environment for both yourself and the children in your care.

“We encourage you to share your ideas, concerns, and suggestions with us. If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can build a safer, more supportive community for everyone,” Kabe added.

Velamina Semono, chairperson of the ECD forum, highlighted the unique challenges faced by women in ECD centres, including limited access to quality training and resources, which can affect the quality of care and education provided.

She said the IEC’s Women’s Month programme can make a tangible difference in the lives of women in créches through empowerment initiatives such as workshops, training sessions, and networking opportunities.

“ECD forums play an important role in supporting and empowering women by offering training, mentorship, and a platform to share experiences,” Semono said.

ECD principals from Winnie Mandela , Tswelopele and Duduza unite.

Looking ahead, Semono said the ECD Forum plans to continue collaborating with the IEC on projects that promote women empowerment, including mentorship programmes and educational initiatives.
