Local entrepreneur wins prestigious award

The Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever Awards is held annually throughout South Africa.

West Rand resident Charlotte du Plessis, the director of Woman of Substance (WoS), has been awarded the prestigious and much sought-after Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever Award for the Strubens Valley branch.

The annual gala event, held in The Ballroom at Montecasino on 14 October, saw entrants from each of Hirsch’s branches in Gauteng, Silverlakes, Centurion, Fourways, Strubens Valley, Meadowdale and Boksburg, compete for the title.

“Winning this award is a great honour,” says Charlotte. “It will enable me to fulfil my purpose which is to empower women by mobilising them to achieve their personal and financial goals. My mission is to re-educate, upskill, connect and support South African women and I am achieving this through WoS and our Five Pillar Empowerment programme.

“This achievement will help us, through increased exposure, grow in membership and raise much-needed funds for the various community projects we are involved in, including the restoration of the dilapidated house The Cradle of Hope bought in Krugersdorp West; our Spread the Cheer Christmas Campaign which provides gifts for children in children’s homes; and our Fundraising Champion competition which has Cansa and HospiceWits as its recipients.”

WoS was formed in 2013 after Charlotte had volunteered for years as a fundraiser for Cansa. During the past three years, the organisation has played an integral role in empowering women from all walks of life by providing networking opportunities and valuable knowledge resources as well as recognising women who have made a positive impact in South Africa through its own Awards ceremony. The WoS Woman of the Year Awards will be held on 11 March 2017 at Emperors Palace.

The Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever Awards is held annually throughout South Africa, and recognises the achievements of female business owners in each of the areas in which there is a Hirsch store.

It was started after Margaret had won many business awards herself, saw the impact that winning an award had on the success of her own business, and recognised the effect it could have for others.
